The walk into Mt Aspiring Hut is one of those classic New Zealand valley hikes that feels far more remote than it actually is. While many use this as a base for bigger alpine missions around Mount Aspiring National Park, it also makes for a rewarding and accessible day hike.

With wide open valley views, river crossings, and a relatively gentle gradient, this is a great option if you want big scenery without a brutal climb.

Overview

The hike from Raspberry Flat to Mount Aspiring Hut is an 18.45km return walk that is mostly flat, with around 170m of elevation gain in total, on well formed trails. It is a straightforward out-and-back walk following the Matukituki Valley, making it more about distance than difficulty. While it lacks the steep climbs of other South Island hikes, the scenery more than makes up for it.
